The Acolyte Review

With each new Star Wars installment, there's always someone proclaiming "Star Wars is Back!" Yet, in the timeless words of Obi-Wan Kenobi, "Star Wars will be with you, always." That sentiment resonates deeply, especially for someone like me who's been following this saga since the days of Return of the Jedi in 1983. It's a joy to still be immersed in the stories from that distant galaxy after 41 years.

The Acolyte transports us back to the genesis of this universe, during the High Republic Era, before the prophecy of the Chosen One and the rise of the Sith. It's an era where the Jedi are revered as guardians, and the galaxy enjoys a rare period of peace. However, whispers of Force-sensitive individuals practicing in secrecy linger in the shadows. Having watched the first four episodes, I'll steer clear of spoilers and focus on the essence of what I've seen.

From the onset, The Acolyte promises a gripping mystery. We're introduced to an assassin seeking revenge against select Jedi, setting the stage for intrigue and action. The initial episodes are brimming with intense sequences, notably showcasing Master Indara's (portrayed by Carrie-Anne Moss) deft combat skills infused with the Force. One can't help but wonder if the martial art form, Teräs Käsi, will make an appearance in this series.

In terms of ambiance, The Acolyte strikes a balance between novelty and familiarity. While some species are recognizable, the bulk of the characters are fresh faces, offering both newcomers and seasoned fans a plethora of individuals to engage with. Although we may miss the iconic names like Skywalker or Solo, the series introduces characters with similar allure and complexity.

As the hunt for the Jedi Assassin unfolds, we delve into the intricate bond between Jedi Master Sol (played by Lee Jung-jae) and Osha (played by Amandla Stenberg), a former Jedi apprentice. Flashbacks unveil Osha's journey into and out of the Jedi Order, shedding light on the organization's selection process, which left me with mixed feelings—a topic I anticipate discussing further as the series progresses.

Overall, The Acolyte stands as a stellar addition to the expanding Star Wars Universe. Witnessing the Jedi in their role as protectors during the High Republic Era is enthralling. The unraveling mystery keeps viewers hooked, eager to uncover the puppeteer behind the assassin's strings and their hidden agenda. The cliffhanger ending of the fourth episode ensures a gripping continuation.

In conclusion, The Acolyte offers a captivating murder mystery within the rich tapestry of George Lucas's creation. It enriches the lore while presenting the Jedi in their prime, resonating with fans old and new. Despite some ethical quandaries surrounding the Jedi, The Acolyte remains a must-watch for Star Wars enthusiasts.

Kid-Friendly Note: While suitable for all ages, the murder mystery theme may not fully engage younger viewers. Nonetheless, the diverse array of characters provides ample appeal, making it an excellent entry point for newcomers.

Violence Advisory: The series contains fantasy violence, including skirmishes among characters, though lightsaber duels have yet to feature. Expect more intense action in subsequent episodes.
